U.S. military bases in South Korea have been put on high alert for the second time in three years as a precaution after
North Korea announced Wednesday that it was withdrawing from the 1953 armistice that ended the fighting in the Korean War.
U.S. forces have served in some ways as a tripwire between the North and the South since the end of that conflict.
William Nash, a retired major general who commanded the 1st Armored Division and later served as the U.N. civil administrator for Kosovo,
said the commander of U.S. forces in South Korea was going through war plans and making sure nonessential personnel on bases were being
evacuated.
