Slippery when wet: The terrifyingly lifelike robot snake that comes to life to mesmerising effect when it enters the water
Lying on the side of the pool the mechanical snake stutters before rolling falteringly into the water.
And then it comes alive.
What on dry land had seemed liked an extravagant child's toy turns into a part-mesmerising, part-terrifying insight into the future of technology.
While appearing clumsy on solid ground, the snake robot, from the Japanese company HiBot and featured on Gizmodo,
glides through the water with body movements indistinguishable from living snakes.
It is terrifying to envisage it being turned into a menacing stealth weapon - but it could also be used to help in flood disaster situations.
At the worst it could easily have a future in some futuristic horror movie.
