Approach The Shohei Ohtani Situation With A Healthy Dose Of Skepticism
There are many reasons why the current company line of Ohtani/MLB must be approached with a healthy dose of skepticism:
The Quick Change To The Initial Story - Why did Mizuhara tell one story to ESPN, one that was then repeated to his teammates by Dodger brass, only for it totally change shape in record time. Sure, it can be argued that all parties were beholden to the words of Mizuhara, who apparently had undue control over Ohtani’s daily life and his basic tasks. Still, these are highly paid, highly competent individuals who were made to look pretty - well, stupid - by Mizuhara.
My personal experience with the industry and the people who run it - which came well before they jumped into bed with the DraftKings and FanDuels of this world, unleashing an intoxicating torrent of new revenue into the sport - make me very skeptical. Mizuhara has already been positioned - by the authorities and to an extent himself - as the patsy, but what if he is confronted with the possibility of significant jail time for something he says he did not do? Is baseball really prepared for what he might have to say if it doesn’t mesh with their preferred narrative?
Obviously, there is much more to be learned about this situation, but the relative silence to this point has been deafening., there is quite a bit of circumstantial evidence that has created uncertainty and smoke. To acknowledge that fact doesn’t make you a conspiracy theorist - it merely makes you sentient.
