Chapter XXXII
I did not see Strickland for several weeks. I was disgusted with him,
and if I had had an opportunity should have been glad to tell him so,
but I saw no object in seeking him out for the purpose. I am a little shy
of any assumption of moral indignation; there is always in it an element
of self-satisfaction which makes it awkward to anyone who has a sense
of humour. It requires a very lively passion to steel me to my own ridicule.
There was a sardonic sincerity in Strickland which made me sensitive to
anything that might suggest a pose.

Rowland offered several criticisms of detail, and suggested certain practicable
changes. But Roderick differed with him on each of these points; the thing had
faults enough, but they were not those faults. Rowland, unruffled, concluded
by saying that whatever its faults might be, he had an idea people in general
would like it.
“I wish to heaven some person in particular would buy it, and take it off my
hands and out of my sight!” Roderick cried. “What am I to do now?” he went
on. “I haven’t an idea. I think of subjects, but they remain mere lifeless
names. They are mere words—they are not images. What am I to do?”

この程度なら受験英語で十分読める
Tourism campaign for Tokyo still up in the air
Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko says she will consider steps relating to the central government's "Go To Travel" domestic tourism campaign, while monitoring the situation of coronavirus infections in the capital.
Koike told reporters on Saturday that the metropolitan government has sent inquiries to relevant ministries and agencies to obtain details of the campaign's temporary suspension. She said she will consider what to do after receiving responses.
The central government has temporarily excluded the cities of Osaka and Sapporo from the "Go To Travel" campaign. Both cities are seeing a resurgence of coronavirus cases. The central government says it will consider how to deal with other cities based on requests from governors.
Koike has so far maintained that the Tokyo government is not in a position to ask the central government to temporarily suspend the campaign for the capital.
On Friday, she told reporters that suspension of the nation-wide tourism campaign should consider both travelers "to" and "from" the city and that's why the central government should make the decision.

In the multipolar world of the 21st century, the major powers will
inevitably compete, clash, and coalesce with each other in various
permutations and combinations. Such a world, however, will lack the
tension and confliction between the superpower and the major
regioinal powers that are the defining characteristic of a
uni-multipolar world. For that reason, the United States, could find life
as a major power in a multipolar world less demanding, less
contentious, and more rewarding than it was as the world’s only
superpower.

A novel by Japan-based Korean author Yu Miri has been awarded one of the most

Yu's "Tokyo Ueno Station" won the prize for best translated work at the National
Book Awards. The novel was originally published in Japanese in 2014.
It tells the story of an elderly man from Fukushima Prefecture who had moved to
the capital to work and support his family. Instead, he spends his days in Ueno
Park. The novel depicts in detail the life of the homeless, highlighting inequalities
widely overlooked by Japanese society during years of economic growth.
Yu moved to Fukushima four years after the region was hit by the 2011 earthquake,

Kurama compares the new mode to nuclear fusion. He states that it is like
fusing two energy matters to make a new energy source. However, he warns
Naruto against making any unnecessary moves during the battle as they
need to conserve the new mode for as long as possible.
Naruto and Isshiki begin the next phase of their fight. With his new
form, Naruto is able to overwhelm his opponent. Moreover, he is able to
block Isshiki’s attacks. Meanwhile, Isshiki uses his cubes technique and
buries Naruto under giant blocks. But, Naruto fights back and emerges out
of the pile of blocks. Isshiki is surprised to sense this sudden increase
in Naruto’s power levels.

At the River-Gates by Philippa Pearce
An old man whose father was a flour miller had one elder brother. He was called Beany and helped their father in the mill.
When the old man was a boy, WWI broke out and Beany went to the
War. So their father had to work harder, without Beany, in the mill.
On one stormy night, their father and his son went up to the gates to
control the flow of water to power the mill. The boy thought his father
couldn’t manage the gates. But through the confusion of the storm he
began to see a figure of a man and saw that it help his father open
the sluice gates and let the flood through.
The next day the telegram came to say that Beany had been killed.

It’s a bit hard to grasp the meaning of this long and complicated sentence.
The assumption on which this is grounded, is that the oath is
worthless, of a person who does not believe in a future state; a
proposition which betokens much ignorance of history in those who
assent to it (since it is historically true that a large proportion of
infidels in all ages have been persons of distinguished integrity and
honor); and would be maintained by no one who had the smallest
conception how many of persons in greatest repute with the world
both for virtues and for attainments, are well known, at least to their
intimates, to be unbelievers. (On Liberty)

In THE SUMMING UP(1938), W. Somerset Maugham says that he
believes there is not so much difference between the good and the
bad, that is to say, he believes good people have vice and baseness
and bad people have virtue and greatness.
Maugham found out that Goethe could not bear the idea that his
father was a middle-class lawyer and sought to persuade himself that
his father must be some prince. The editor of the copy he read wrote
an indignant footnote but Maugham thought it was not uncommon.
He realized that even such a great poet had snobbishness.
Maugham wrote he had met “crooks who were capable of self-sacrifice,
sneak-thieves who were sweet-natured and harlots for whom it was a
point of honour to give good value for money.” He was moved when he
discovered the goodness of the wicked.
As mentioned above, Maugham observed and believed that the same
person had lack of consistency and seemingly incongruous traits
existed in him or her. What he wanted to express was the contrast
that he had observed in people, namely, the wickedness of the good
and the goodness of the wicked.

Excerpts from On Liberty.
A state of things in which a large portion of the most active and inquiring
intellects find it advisable to keep the genuine principles and grounds of
their convictions within their own breasts, and attempts, in what they address
to the public, to fit as much as they can of their own conclusions to premises
which they have internally renounced, cannot send forth the open, fearless
characters, and logical, consistent intellects who once adorned the thinking
world.
Those who avoid this alternative, do so by narrowing their thoughts
and interests to things which can be spoken of without venturing
within the region of principles, that is, to small practical matters,
which would come right of themselves, if but the minds of mankind
were strengthened and enlarged, and which will never be made
effectually right until then; while that which would strengthen and
enlarge men’s minds, free and daring speculation on the highest
subjects is abandoned.

What art thou that usurp'st this time of night,
Together with that fair and warlike form
In which the majesty of buried Denmark

I think this passage is very interesting.
Not that it is solely, or chiefly, to form great thinkers, that freedom of thinking is
required. On the contrary, it is as much, and even more indispensable, to enable
average human beings to attain the mental stature which they are capable of.
There have been, and may again be, great individual thinkers, in a general atmosphere
of mental slavery. But there never has been, nor ever will be, in that atmosphere,
an intellectually active people. Where any people has made a temporary approach
to such a character, it has been because the dread of heterodox speculation was
for a time suspended. Where there is a tacit convention that principles are not to
be disputed; where the discussion of the greatest questions which can occupy
humanity is considered to be closed, we cannot hope to find that generally high
scale of mental activity which has made some periods of history so remarkable.

21/01/12 16:40:38.02 PQTmAKUK0.net
Never when controversy avoided the subjects which are large and important
enough to kindle enthusiasm, was the mind of a people stirred up from its foundations,
and the impulse given which raised even persons of the most ordinary intellect to
something of the dignity of thinking beings. Of such we have had an example in
the condition of Europe during the times immediately following the Reformation;
another, though limited to the Continent and to a more cultivated class, in the speculative
movement of the latter half of the eighteenth century; and a third, of still briefer
duration, in the intellectual fermentation of Germany during the Goethian and Fichtean
period. These periods differed widely in the particular opinions which they developed;
but were alike in this, that during all three the yoke of authority was broken. In
each, an old mental despotism had been thrown off, and no new one had yet taken
its place. The impulse given at these three periods has made Europe what it now
is. Every single improvement which has taken place either in the human mind or
in institutions, may be traced distinctly to one or other of them. Appearances have
for some time indicated that all three impulses are well-nigh spent; and we can expect
no fresh start, until we again assert our mental freedom.

he was special, not knowing he was famous, not knowing he would be woken
in a few hours' time by Mrs. Dursley's scream as she opened the front door to
put out the milk bottles, nor that he would spend the next few weeks being
prodded and pinched by his cousin Dudley...

A Quote from Act1, Scene2 in Hamlet
Claudius
'Tis sweet and commendable in your nature, Hamlet,
To give these mourning duties to your father.
But you must know — your father lost a father;
That father lost, lost his; and the survivor bound ← [was] bound
In filial obligation, for some term,
To do obsequious sorrow. But to persevere
In obstinate condolement is a course
Of impious stubbornness. 'Tis unmanly grief.
It shows a will most incorrect to heaven,
A heart unfortified, a mind impatient,
An understanding simple and unschooled
For what we know must be, and is, as common
As any the most vulgar thing to sense. ← as the most familiar and obvious thing in the world
Why should we, in our peevish opposition,
Take it to heart? Fie! 'Tis a fault to heaven,
A fault against the dead, a fault to nature,
To reason most absurd —whose common theme

Is death of fathers, and who still hath cried,
From the first corpse till he that died today,
'This must be so.' We pray you, throw to earth
This unprevailing woe, and think of us ←unprevailing= unavailing
As of a father. For let the world take note,
You are the most immediate to our throne.
And with no less nobility of love
Than that which dearest father bears his son,
Do I impart towards you. For your intent
In going back to school in Wittenberg,
It is most retrograde to our desire. ←retrograde = contrary
And we beseech you, bend you to remain
Here, in the cheer and comfort of our eye,
Our chiefest courtier, cousin, and our son.

while Piggy is concerned.
“There was that pilot. But he wasn’t in the passenger cabin, he was up in front.”

"all them" is not grammatically correct, you should use "all of them" instead.
In some particular English dialects, you may sometimes hear people say
"all them" instead of "all those", but it's not grammatically correct (as far as I know).

An Unnamed, Uninhabited Tropical Island in the Pacific Ocean
The shore was fledged with palm trees. These stood or leaned or reclined
against the light and their green feathers were a hundred feet up in
the air. The ground beneath them was a bank covered with coarse grass,
torn everywhere by the upheavals of fallen trees, scattered with decaying
coconuts and palm saplings. Behind this was the darkness of the forest
proper and the open space of the scar. Ralph stood, one hand against a
grey trunk, and screwed up his eyes against the shimmering water. Out
there, perhaps a mile away, the white surf flinked on a coral reef, and
beyond that the open sea was dark blue. Within the irregular arc of coral
the lagoon was still as a mountain lake—blue of all shades and shadowy
green and purple. The beach between the palm terrace and the water
was a thin stick, endless apparently, for to Ralph’s left the perspectives of
palm and beach and water drew to a point at infinity; and always, almost
visible, was the heat. ーLord of the Flies Chapter 1 The Sound of the Shell―
The word flinked appears to have been invented by the author.

Lord of the Flies Quotes
Ralph had been deceived before now by the specious appearance of depth in
a beach pool and he approached this one preparing to be disappointed.
But the island ran true to form and the incredible pool, which clearly was
only invaded by the sea at high tide, was so deep at one end as to be dark green.
The water was warmer than his blood and he might have been swimming in a huge bath.
might have been
You use might have with a past participle to indicate that it is possible that something
happened or was true, or when giving a possible explanation for something.

ホラ貝を見つけるシーン
Ralph looked through him. Here at last was the imagined but never
fully realized place leaping into real life. Ralph’s lips parted in a delighted
smile and Piggy, taking this smile to himself as a mark of recognition,
laughed with pleasure.
“If it really is an island—”
“What’s that?”
Ralph spoke absently. The shell was interesting and pretty and a worthy
plaything; but the vivid phantoms of his day-dream still interposed
between him and Piggy, who in this context was an irrelevance. The palm
sapling, bending, pushed the shell across the weeds. Ralph used one hand
as a fulcrum and pressed down with the other till the shell rose, dripping,
and Piggy could make a grab.
