ホラ貝を見つけるシーン
Ralph looked through him. Here at last was the imagined but never
fully realized place leaping into real life. Ralph’s lips parted in a delighted
smile and Piggy, taking this smile to himself as a mark of recognition,
laughed with pleasure.
“If it really is an island—”
“What’s that?”
Ralph spoke absently. The shell was interesting and pretty and a worthy
plaything; but the vivid phantoms of his day-dream still interposed
between him and Piggy, who in this context was an irrelevance. The palm
sapling, bending, pushed the shell across the weeds. Ralph used one hand
as a fulcrum and pressed down with the other till the shell rose, dripping,
and Piggy could make a grab.

平井って人の訳（たぶん誤訳）
“What’s that?”
「それがどうしたというの」
↑「あれは何だ？」でいいとおもふ。
Ralph used one hand as a fulcrum and pressed down with the other till the shell
rose, dripping, and Piggy could make a grab.
ラーフは、片手を支えにして、もう一方の手をつっこみ、とうとう貝を引き上げるこ
とができた。びしょ濡れのままその貝が出てくるや否や、ピギーはそれを引っ掴んだ。

the palm saplingを片手でささえて（＝支点にして） もう一方の手でThe palm
saplingの片方を下げたんだとおもう （そうすると 貝のついてるもう一方があがる
ことになる）
「もう一方の手をつっこみ」って訳で こういう動作を描写できてる感じがしない

たぶん 通常の仮定法と異なる用法ってことで注目して
わざわざ論文書いたんだろうけど どうでもいいことを難しくいってるような気もする
