Pessimism reigns supreme in Japan as the national team prepares to tackle a tough-looking Group E,
although coach Takeshi Okada has bucked the trend by telling his players they can make the last four.
However, in reality, most Samurai Blue supporters are agreed on one hope: that attacking right wing-back Uchida will make them proud.
The 22-year-old is a crowd favourite with Kashima Antlers,
J.League champions for the last three years.
Bombing down the flank and whipping in crosses, he generally makes life very difficult for opposing left-backs.
Uchida was linked with a move to Schalke back in January but ultimately stayed in Kashima.
Only three Japan squad regulars currently ply their trade abroad (striker Takayuki Morimoto may miss out on South Africa
after his great strides at Catania were checked by the signing of Maxi Lopez), and it is widely acknowledged that
more exporting is needed if Japan are to become a major force in the world game.
Uchida arguably stands the best chance from the current crop of making it big in Europe.
