There was an uncomfortable moment during the men's news conference
when Joubert was asked to explain remarks to French TV
that seemed to criticize Buttle's gold since he did not even attempt the quad.
"Jeffrey did the perfect competition, he made no mistakes,
but he didn't try the quad jump," Joubert said.
In an attempt to diffuse the jumping controversy,
Lambiel's coach suggested a qualifying event without jumps.
"That would be very difficult, because jumps are part of the program,"
said Olympic and world champion Dick Button, a longtime figure skating commentator.
The jumps, Button said, are "the exclamation points."
But the increased emphasis on elements ? jumps, spins, footwork ?
has taken away the presentation from the programs, Button said.
"Sometimes a skater who spends time rushing back and forth building points misses
that this is ... a show with a theatrical element to it,"
Button said.
As a result, he said, the long program ? intended to showcase presentation ?
has become virtually indistinguishable from the short program,
which has always emphasized execution.
"One is a long-sleeve shirt, and one is a short-sleeve shirt," Button said.
