There is a recognised phenomenon of a variety of cellular stresses
inducing changes like epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in
cancerous, precancerous and normal cells. It is presumed to be in
part an adaptive protective response; EMT often confers resistence
to various cell death stimuli. The EMT has been related to induced
expression of stem cell characteristics (Mani, et al. Cell 133,
704-715). This may have snapped into this program. Nevertheless the
precautionary TGTBT principle applies for the present (ie. too good
to be true). There's always cold fusion to remember.
