すぐそれと分かる化粧品を用いていた。性別による違いは、階級差に比べて
大きくはなかった―化粧によってその人は貴族的で今風になり、社会的地位を
上げたい人、最新流行をめざす人たちの間で受け入れられるようになった。
化粧は自然に見えることを目指すものではなく、実際それはpaintと呼ばれて
いた。

both men and women in England and France wore obvious cosmetics.
Gender differences were less important than class differences –
cosmetics marked one as aristocratic and à la mode, and were adopted
as well by those who were trying to rise in social status or become
fashionable. Makeup was not intended to look natural – in fact,
it was called “paint”
