Two recent studies concluded that the increasing incidence of thyroid cancer could be a result of improved diagnosis of subclinical cancers due to the increased use of
ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (11, 12). Many of these subclinical cancers are tumors measuring 1 cm or smaller (13) that lie dormant in the general population,
never manifesting, and usually left undiagnosed.
