Thyroid nodules are lumps which commonly arise within an otherwise normal thyroid gland.[1]
They indicate a thyroid neoplasm, but only a small percentage of these are thyroid cancers.
Sometimes a thyroid nodule presents as a fluid-filled cavity (called a thyroid cyst). Often,
solid components are mixed with the fluid. Thyroid cysts most commonly result from degenerating thyroid adenomas,
which are benign, but they occasionally contain malignant solid components

甲状腺結節病変(thyroid nodule)は、それ以外では正常な甲状腺内で生まれる個形体(lump)である。
結節性病変は甲状腺癌(新生物)を示唆するが、実際に甲状腺癌であるのはその一部である。
ある場合、甲状腺結節病変(thyroid nodule)は液体状の窪みとして現れる(これを甲状腺のう胞=thyroid cystと呼ぶ)。
しばしば、充実性の部分は液状形態と混ざり合っている。甲状腺のう胞は、甲状腺腺腫の退行から生まれる
ことが一般的である。それは良性であるが、ときに悪性の充実性部分を含んでいる。
つまり、
thyroid nodule → 悪性なら甲状腺がん
thyroid nodule → 良性で液状袋のもの=嚢胞(cyst)
thyroid nodule → 良性で充実性のもの=シコリ(solid components)
thyroid nodule → 良性で両者の混合形=嚢胞とシコリの中間 (mixed components)
thyroid nodule → その他の甲状腺疾患(腺腫など)
そして、>>86にあるように、この意味でのthyroid noduleは、エコー検査により子どもの0.2 %から5.1%にある(99年、2006年)。
つまり、日本の子どもの58%(山梨は68%)にthyroid noduleがあるということは、決して正常ではない事態となります。
