In fact, there is some skepticism about this relationship, one being that the detection of occult cancer
as a result of the intensive surveillance in the Chernobyl area might have contributed to the dramatic increase
in childhood thyroid cancer around Chernobyl. Nevertheless, a histological review of thyroid cancers [reveal that]
occult thyroid carcinoma is observed rarely at autopsy in adolescents. Recently, the incidence of occult thyroid
carcinoma in Minsk, Belarus was investigated in 215 autopsy cases aged 19 to 88 years.
Carcinoma was found 20 cases (9/3%). All patients were over 40 years old, and all except one of the tumors were
papillary carcinoma smaller than 5 mm in diameter. In our series, the mean tumor size was 16 mm, with a minimum diameter of 6mm.
These facts suggest that the increase in childhood thyroid cancer is due,
not to the detection of occult carcinoma, but to other factors such as radiation exposure.
