「銃身内にライフリングを施された小銃」のことを「ライフル」と呼ぶのは、日本語として
全く不自然ではありません。（例：コブクロの「この指とまれ！」）
それどころか、英語ですら
a long gun which you hold up to your shoulder to shoot
あるいは
A rifle is a firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder, with a barrel
that has a helical groove or pattern of grooves ("rifling") cut into the barrel walls.
のように、いわゆるライフル銃がライフルの第一義であるのに、言いがかりを付けてくる
