Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko of the Japanese imperial family
arrived on a three-day official visit to Bulgaria
on May 13 2009 on the invitation of President Georgi Purvanov.
The royal visit will mark the 50th anniversary of the resumption
of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
After conferring with Purvanov on May 13 the prince
and the princess will visit Alexandorvo village
in the eastern parts of Rhodope Mountains
where they will inaugurate a replica of a Thracian tomb.
The Japanese government has allocated $3.5 million for the restoration of the tomb.
Next on their agenda is a visit to the town of Smoalyan and the Shiroka Luka village,
both in the Rhodope, as well as meetings with Bulgarian students studying Japanese,
Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov and former prime minister and former Bulgarian monarch Simeon Saxe-Coburg.
