In those days, some medical idiot had brought tar-water back into fashion as an excellent remedy, and Mrs. Joe always kept a supply of it in the cupboard, believing in its healing powers in exact proportion to how disgusting it was. Even at the best of times, so much of this foul mixture was given to me as a special restorative that I went around smelling like a newly painted fence. On this particular evening, the seriousness of my condition called for a whole pint of it, which was poured down my throat for my supposed comfort while Mrs. Joe held my head under her arm the way a boot is held in a bootjack. Joe got off with only half a pint, but he was forced to swallow even that—much to his discomfort, as he sat slowly chewing and reflecting by the fire—because, as she said, “he had had a turn.” Judging from my own experience, I should say he certainly had a turn afterward, if he had not had one before.

Conscience is a dreadful thing when it accuses a man or a boy. But in the case of a boy, when that secret burden is joined by another secret burden hidden down the leg of his trousers, it becomes, as I can testify, a severe punishment. The guilty knowledge that I was about to rob Mrs. Joe—I never thought of it as robbing Joe, because I never considered any household property to belong to him—combined with the need to keep one hand on my bread and butter whenever I sat down, or whenever I was sent on some small errand around the kitchen, nearly drove me out of my mind. Then, whenever the marsh wind made the fire glow and flare, I thought I could hear outside the voice of the man with the iron on his leg, the man who had sworn me to secrecy, declaring that he could not and would not wait until tomorrow without food, but had to be fed at once. At other moments I thought: what if the young man who had been restrained with such difficulty from staining his hands with my blood should give in to his natural impatience, or get the time wrong, and suppose that he had permission to come for my heart and liver tonight instead of tomorrow? If anyone’s hair has ever stood on end with terror, mine surely must have done so then. But perhaps nobody’s ever really has.
It was Christmas Eve, and I had to stir the pudding for the next day, using a copper stirrer, from seven to eight by the Dutch clock. I tried doing it with the load on my leg—and that made me think again of the man with the load on his leg—and found that the movement made the bread and butter slide down toward my ankle in a way I could hardly control. Fortunately, I managed to slip away and hide that part of my guilty conscience in my little attic bedroom.
