英米文学の古典を現代英語で読む意義とは？
意義はかなりあります。単なる「読みやすさ」の問題ではなく、古典の中身に到達しやすくなるのが大きいです。
まず、英米文学の古典は、内容そのものが難しいというより、語彙・構文・言い回し・時代背景が読者を遠ざけることが多いです。現代英語版にすると、その「言葉の壁」がかなり下がります。すると、もともと見えるはずだった
人間心理
階級社会
恋愛や結婚観
宗教観
権力や道徳の葛藤
が、ずっとはっきり見えてきます。
つまり、古典の価値は古語そのものにだけあるのではなく、そこに描かれた経験や思考にあるので、現代英語化には十分意味があります。
もう一つ大きいのは、挫折しにくいことです。
原文のままだと、数ページで消耗して「自分には無理だ」で終わりがちです。けれど現代英語なら、まず作品全体をつかめる。筋、人物、主題、作者の問題意識がわかる。するとあとで原文に戻ったときも、「何が書いてあるか分からない文章」ではなく、すでに知っている作品の難しい表現として読めます。これは非常に大きいです。
さらに、現代英語で読むことには、比較読書の利点もあります。
たとえば原文の一節と現代英語版を並べると、
どの語感が落ちたか
どの皮肉が弱まったか
どの比喩が言い換えられたか
どこが作者特有の文体なのか
が見えてきます。
これはむしろ、文学の核心に近づく読み方です。最初から全部原文で格闘するより、作品の骨格と文体の差を意識しやすいことさえあります。

語の古風な響き
曖昧さ
文体そのものの個性
は薄れやすいです。
シェイクスピア、ミルトン、ディケンズ、ジェイン・オースティン、メルヴィル、ヘンリー・ジェイムズのような作家では特にそうです。なので、現代英語版は代用品というより入口と考えるのがいちばん自然です。
要するに、
現代英語で古典を読む意義は、古典を「読めるもの」に変え、作品の思想・人物・主題にまず到達できることにある。
そして、その理解を土台にして原文へ戻ると、原文の価値もより深く分かる。
ということです。
一言でいえば、
原文至上主義で何も読めないより、現代英語で本質をつかむほうが、はるかに生産的です。

Next to their grave were five small stone markers, each about a foot and a half long, lined up neatly in a row. They were dedicated to the memory of my five little brothers, who had given up the struggle to make a living at a very early stage in that universal human battle. Because of those stones, I firmly and devoutly believed that all five of them had been born lying on their backs with their hands in their trouser pockets, and that they had never taken them out during their entire time in this world.

At the same time, he wrapped his trembling body in both arms, clutching himself as if trying to hold himself together, and limped toward the low church wall. As I watched him go, picking his way through the nettles and the brambles that surrounded the grassy mounds, he seemed to my young imagination like a man escaping from the hands of the dead, who were cautiously stretching up out of their graves to grab his ankle and pull him down.
When he reached the low church wall, he climbed over it like a man whose legs were numb and stiff, and then turned around to look for me. When I saw him turn, I faced toward home and ran as fast as I could. But after a moment I looked back over my shoulder and saw him moving on again toward the river, still hugging himself with both arms and carefully making his way with his sore feet among the large stones scattered here and there across the marshes, placed there as stepping-stones when the rain was heavy or the tide was in.
The marshes were only a long black horizontal line then, as I stopped to watch him, and the river was just another horizontal line, not nearly as wide and not as black. The sky was nothing but a row of long, angry red streaks mixed with thick black ones. At the river’s edge I could faintly make out the only two black things in the whole landscape that seemed to be standing upright. One was the beacon by which sailors guided themselves—like a barrel without hoops set on top of a pole, ugly when seen up close. The other was a gibbet, with chains hanging from it that had once held a pirate. The man was limping toward that second object as if he were the pirate come back to life, climbed down, and now going back to hang himself up again. The thought gave me a terrible shock, and when I saw the cattle lifting their heads to stare after him, I wondered whether they thought so too. I looked all around for the horrible young man, but could see no sign of him. Then I became frightened again and ran home without stopping.

Joe was a fair-haired man, with curls of pale blond hair on either side of his smooth face, and with such an uncertain shade of blue in his eyes that the blue seemed somehow to have blended with the whites. He was gentle, kind, sweet-tempered, easygoing, simple, and dear—a man like Hercules in strength, but also like Hercules in weakness.
My sister, Mrs. Joe, had black hair and black eyes, and her skin was so constantly red that I sometimes wondered whether she washed herself with a nutmeg grater instead of soap. She was tall and bony, and she almost always wore a rough apron, tied behind her with two loops, with a stiff, square front panel that was covered with pins and needles. She regarded wearing this apron as one of her great virtues, and she treated it as strong evidence against Joe that she had to wear it so often. Personally, though, I could see no reason why she needed to wear it at all—or why, if she did wear it, she should not have taken it off at some point every single day of her life.
Joe’s forge stood next to our house, which was made of wood, like many of the houses in our part of the country—in fact, most of them were like that at the time. When I ran home from the churchyard, the forge was closed, and Joe was sitting alone in the kitchen. Since Joe and I both suffered under the same hardships, and shared secrets because of it, Joe gave me a confidential look the moment I lifted the door latch and peeked in at him, sitting in the corner by the fireplace.

“Mrs. Joe has gone out looking for you at least twelve times, Pip. And she’s out again now, making it thirteen.”
“Is she?”
“Yes, Pip,” said Joe. “And worse than that, she’s taken Tickler with her.”
At this depressing news, I twisted the only button on my waistcoat over and over again and stared gloomily at the fire. Tickler was a cane with a waxed end, worn smooth from striking my poor body so often.
“She sat down,” said Joe, “then she got up, grabbed Tickler, and stormed out. That’s what she did,” said Joe, slowly clearing the fire between the lower bars with the poker and staring at it. “She stormed out, Pip.”
“Has she been gone long, Joe?” I always treated him as if he were simply a bigger kind of child, no more than my equal.
“Well,” said Joe, glancing up at the Dutch clock, “this time she’s been out on the rampage for about five minutes, Pip. She’s coming! Get behind the door, old chap, and keep the jack-towel between you.”
I took his advice. My sister, Mrs. Joe, threw the door wide open, found something blocking it, immediately guessed what caused it, and used Tickler to investigate further. She finished by throwing me—I often served as something to be hurled between husband and wife—at Joe, who was glad to catch hold of me on any terms, passed me into the chimney corner, and quietly fenced me in there with his great leg.
“Where have you been, you young monkey?” said Mrs. Joe, stamping her foot. “Tell me at once what you’ve been doing to wear me out with anxiety, fear, and worry, or I’d drag you out of that corner if there were fifty Pips and five hundred Gargerys.”
“I’ve only been to the churchyard,” I said from my stool, crying and rubbing myself.

“Churchyard!” repeated my sister. “If it hadn’t been for me, you’d have gone to the churchyard long ago and stayed there. Who raised you by hand?”
“You did,” I said.
“And why did I do it, I’d like to know?” cried my sister.
I whimpered, “I don’t know.”
“I don’t!” said my sister. “I’d never do it again, that much I know. I can honestly say I’ve never had this apron off since the day you were born. It’s bad enough being a blacksmith’s wife—and him a Gargery—without being your mother too.”
My thoughts drifted away from that question as I stared sadly into the fire. The escaped convict out on the marshes with the iron on his leg, the mysterious young man, the file, the food, and the terrible promise that bound me to steal from the very house that sheltered me all rose before me in the glowing coals like threats of revenge.
“Ha!” said Mrs. Joe, putting Tickler back in its place. “Churchyard indeed! You two may well talk about the churchyard.” In fact, one of us had not said it at all. “The two of you will drive me to the churchyard one of these days, and oh, what a precious pair you’d be without me!”

While my sister was busy setting out the things for tea, Joe peered down at me over his leg, as if he were mentally adding the two of us together and calculating what kind of pair we would make in the terrible circumstances he imagined were coming. After that, he sat feeling the fair curls and whisker on the right side of his face and followed Mrs. Joe around with his blue eyes, which was always his habit in stormy moments.
My sister had a sharp, efficient way of cutting bread and butter for us, and she always did it the same way. First, she pressed the loaf hard against her apron with her left hand—sometimes so hard that a pin stuck into it, and sometimes a needle, which we later found in our mouths. Then she took some butter—not too much—on a knife and spread it over the bread in a manner that reminded me of an apothecary preparing a plaster, using both sides of the knife with brisk slapping skill and scraping and shaping the butter neatly around the crust. Then she gave the knife one final quick wipe along the edge of the buttery surface, and sawed off a very thick slice from the loaf. Finally, before separating it completely, she chopped it into two halves, one for Joe and the other for me.

On this occasion, although I was hungry, I did not dare eat my piece. I felt I had to keep something in reserve for my dreadful acquaintance and his ally, the even more dreadful young man. I knew that Mrs. Joe ran the household in the strictest possible way, and that if I searched like a thief, I might find nothing usable in the pantry. So I decided to hide my chunk of bread and butter down the leg of my trousers.
The effort of will needed to carry out this plan felt absolutely dreadful. It was as if I had to force myself to jump off the top of a tall house or dive into deep water. And it was made even harder by innocent Joe. Because of the secret bond between us as fellow sufferers, and because of his good-natured companionship, Joe and I had a regular evening habit of comparing how much we had bitten off our slices by silently holding them up for each other’s admiration from time to time—which encouraged both of us to fresh efforts. Tonight, Joe repeatedly invited me, by showing me how quickly his slice was shrinking, to join our usual friendly competition. But every time he looked, he found me with my yellow mug of tea on one knee and my untouched bread and butter on the other. At last, in desperation, I decided that what I intended had to be done, and that it would be best to do it in the least suspicious way the situation allowed. I took advantage of a moment when Joe had just looked at me, and slipped my bread and butter down my trouser leg.
Joe was clearly made uncomfortable by what he took to be my loss of appetite, and he took a thoughtful bite from his own slice, though he did not seem to enjoy it. He moved it around in his mouth much longer than usual, thinking about it a great deal, and in the end swallowed it like a pill. He was about to take another bite, and had just tilted his head to get a better grip on it, when his eye fell on me and he saw that my bread and butter was gone.
The astonishment and alarm with which Joe froze at the very edge of taking his bite and stared at me were too obvious for my sister to miss.

By this time my sister was in a fury, so she pounced on Joe and, seizing him by both whiskers, knocked his head against the wall behind him for a little while, while I sat in the corner watching guiltily.
“Now perhaps you’ll say what the matter is,” said my sister, out of breath, “you great staring stuck pig.”
Joe looked at her helplessly, then took another helpless bite, and looked at me again.
“You know, Pip,” said Joe solemnly, with his last bite still in his cheek, and speaking in a confidential voice as if the two of us were quite alone, “you and I are always friends, and I’d be the last person ever to tell on you. But such a—” He moved his chair and looked around at the floor between us, and then at me again—“such an extraordinary bolt as that!”
“He’s been bolting his food, has he?” cried my sister.
“You know, old chap,” said Joe, looking at me and not at Mrs. Joe, with his bite still in his cheek, “I bolted my food myself when I was your age—often—and as a boy I knew plenty of bolters; but I never saw anyone bolt food the way you do, Pip, and it’s a mercy you haven’t choked to death.”

Then, whenever the marsh wind made the fire glow and flare, I thought I could hear outside the voice of the man with the iron on his leg, the man who had sworn me to secrecy, declaring that he could not and would not wait until tomorrow without food, but had to be fed at once. At other moments I thought: what if the young man who had been restrained with such difficulty from staining his hands with my blood should give in to his natural impatience, or get the time wrong, and suppose that he had permission to come for my heart and liver tonight instead of tomorrow? If anyone’s hair has ever stood on end with terror, mine surely must have done so then. But perhaps nobody’s ever really has.
It was Christmas Eve, and I had to stir the pudding for the next day, using a copper stirrer, from seven to eight by the Dutch clock. I tried doing it with the load on my leg—and that made me think again of the man with the load on his leg—and found that the movement made the bread and butter slide down toward my ankle in a way I could hardly control. Fortunately, I managed to slip away and hide that part of my guilty conscience in my little attic bedroom.
