Ms Merkel is right to tackle the issue of immigration head-on. Thanks to its history and electoral arrangements,
Germany has so far been spared a nationally successful anti-immigrant party like those in Sweden, the Netherlands and
Denmark. But this may not remain the case. Polls suggest that such a party could win up to 20 per cent of the vote.
This is probably an exaggeration. But in this context, it is dangerous to leave the topic of immigration to Islamophobic
demagogues. By showing that the political mainstream takes voters’ concerns about integration and immigration
seriously, Ms Merkel and her colleagues can spike the xenophobes’ guns.
メルケル首相が移民の持つ問題に取り組む姿勢を示しているのは正しい。スウェーデン、オランダ、デンマークと同じように
ドイツ国内にも反移民の政党が広がりつつある。世論調査によれば、それらの過激派政党は20％までの支持を得る可能性
がある。これは過剰な推測ではあろうけれど、移民問題をイスラム嫌悪症のデマゴーグの手に委ねることは危険である。
政治的メインストリーム（である与党CDU)が有権者の関心事である移民と同化の問題を真剣に取り上げることによって
メルケル首相と与党はイスラム嫌悪症（の極右政党）のもつ危険な武器にスパイクを打ち込むことが出来る(ry

＊FTは、政治的に厄介であるけれど重要であり有権者の関心の高い問題にメルケル首相が真剣に踏み込む姿勢をみせた
ことを評価する。これは当然で、真剣に対峙しないなら、そういう問題が悪化することは確実。その一方で、国内メディアは
中国問題であれ移民問題であれ、反中国デモであれ、厄介な問題は（駝鳥の如く）一切無視して、そういう問題の存在自体
を否定する。そういうメディアは、民主主義と国民の敵というべき。
