South Korea fails to sell inflation-linked bonds

SEOUL, Aug 20 (Reuters) - South Korea failed to sell any index-linked treasury
bonds on Wednesday as investors sought high yields on expectations inflation
would ease in Asia's fourth-largest economy.
The ministry said it offered 150 billion won ($143 million) worth of the 10-year
treasury bonds, but awarded none with just a tender of 60 billion won at a yield
of 3.18 percent.
Although South Korean consumer prices in July rose 5.9 percent from a year earlier,
marking the fastest annual growth in nearly 10 years, the government expects
inflation to slow in the second half of the year.
Last week, Vice Finance Minister Kim Dong-soo said the government did not plan to
revise up its consumer inflation expectations of 4.5 percent for 2008 despite higher
public service charges.
Meanwhile, Hana Daetoo Securities' Kong said the demand for these bonds had also
been weak because of the long tenor.
'A 10-year (maturity) is too long. Who do you think wants to buy the bonds only waiting
for higher inflation?,' he added.
