Governing Democratic Progressive Party presidential candidate Frank Hsieh (謝長廷)
failed to meet with Tokyo Governor Ishihara Shintaro on Monday due to the latter's illness,
but a source said that he had a closed-door meeting with former Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso.
Aso visited Hsieh at the hotel where Hsieh was staying in Kyoto Sunday night for a private meeting,
said the source without offering details.
Seen by the media as a pro-Taiwan Japanese politician, Aso has made a number of remarks in favor of Taiwan,
including a comment he made in his capacity as Japan's foreign minister in March last year
referring to Taiwan as a "law-abiding country."
