WSJのグローバル・ビューのコーナーでBRET STEPHENSがDNIのイラン核開発アセスメント
（NIE)を論じているもの。この中で、ブッシュ政権がCIAのトンでもアセスメントをあえ
て承認・公表した理由について書いていて：
The likely answer is that the administration calculated that any effort by them to
suppress or tweak the NIE would surely leak, leading to accusations of
"politicizing intelligence." But that only means that we now have an "intelligence
community" that acts as an authority unto itself, and cannot be trusted to obey
its political masters, much less keep a secret. The administration's tacit
acquiescence in this state of affairs may prove even more damaging than its
wishful thinking on Iran.
(ブッシュ大統領が何故これを承認したのかという疑問への)解答としては、それを抑制した
場合に、おそらくは確実にリークされて、ブッシュ政権が諜報情報を政治操作しているとい
う非難が起きることを予想した為であろう。今明らかになったことは諜報コミニティという
のは自己目的にのみ奉仕する組織で、政治的な上層部に従うとは信用できないという事であ
る。さらに機密保全ですら危ういであろう。国の機関のそうした状態と言うのは、そのイラ
ンへのウイッシュフル・シンキング以上に危険なものだ(後略）
