Surveys have shown Fukuda well ahead of hawkish, outspoken former foreign minister
Taro Aso, who has pitched himself as the strong leader Japan needs now, although a
crowd of Aso’s supporters -- many alerted by Internet -- gathered near LDP
headquarters, shouting his name and holding up banners.
"I think Aso is a politician who would lead the country in a sound direction," said one
man in his 40s attending the rally.
"Fukuda isn’t. Aso would pursue the assertive diplomacy he implemented as foreign minister."
