It comes down to trade, business, and money. China is an emerging
economic power that will compete with the USA in perhaps a couple
decades from now, and it's in America's interest to benefit from
from them. It isn't a complex or exciting explanation, but don't
be fooled into the idea the American government is in it just to
spread democracy, which is what we call neo-conservative idealogy.
Iraq was never about removing Hussein and "spreading freedom", it
came down to a combination of American geopolitical benefits (regional
control, oil) and huge business interests regarding infrastructure,
oil fields, etc. If you study the history of American foreign policy
around the world, we've had no qualm about removing democratically-
elected leaders to install fascist pro-USA regimes in our interest.
This is the case for Chile, Iran, Iraq, Nicaragua, etc. With that
said, the fact that Taiwan should and deserves independence doesn't
mean anything compared to the insurmountable economic/business
interests that we have in China. It's that simple.
