Anyway, as you pointed out, such things are only a part of Japanese (sub)cultures,
and I believe there's misunderstanding. Take gothic-lolita fashion for examle.
Some non-Japanese people taking infomation only through the websites dealing with it
would take it that those fashions are the mainstream, and think Japanese people
wouldn't roll their eyes at them, which is wrong. Personally, they would get shocked
to know most Japanese people don't wear such clothes to walk out on the street except
where such minority people get together. Well, let's get back to weeaboos..
From your description, weeaboos are the people who love Japan too much to look down on
their own cultures. In that sense, likewise, we have some Japanese people who love America too much
to look down on their own culture and other Japanese people - say, "japamerican" (just my invention).
Japamerican is treated the same way as weeaboos here in Japan. They believe america is a utopia or something.
Silly, isn't it? All they know about America is hollywood celebrities. Other Japanese will make fun of them.
Having said that, though, just liking American stuff doesn't mean they are American-wannabe,
because as for Japanese people, anything goes as long as American pop cultures (in this case)
are good enough to pay attention. And this is my take, but American people are too proud of
their culture to accept other cultures or they never think of accepting other cultures as it is.
No? Then why do Hollywood remake Japanese movies? Because they'd never think of watching subbed-movies
in the theater. Only this example reflects American people's provincial mindedness, no offence.
Anyway, I have a good idea. Let's exchange weeaboos and Japamerican for the sake of peaceful life. lol
