と Synaptic パッケージマネージャと同じような結果になりました。

Ubuntu 7.10 のクリーン状態からアップデートマネージャで
8.04 にアップデートしました
Thunderbird 2 は tar.gz をダウンロード後、/opt に展開、
./thunderbird と実行した次第です
thunderbird-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
ちなみに Firefox は、初めから入っていた 3 のベータ版？を削除後、
3.01 を問題なく実行できました
