そのpaperをななめ読みしてみたが、
3 VGA Emulationに以下の記述がある
Some vendors like Matrox provide a sophisticated frame buffer device
driver which can initialize the hardware from the power-up state to any
video mode available by the hardware.
つまり、Matrox以外のvideo cardを使うのにいろいろ苦労しているのじゃまいか。
Documentation/fb/matroxfb.txt にも PPC 大丈夫そうなことが書かれている。
KconfigのFB_MATROXでXFree86 fbdev driverでいけそうな予感。
