Yuzuru Hanyu is the current Olympic champion in ice skating
On 11 March 2011, Yuzuru Hanyu was 16 and coached figure skating in Sendai
when the earthquake that left more than 15 000 fatalities destroyed cities in Japan.
Seeing the gym swing and feel the ice under his feet shake, Yuzuru ran : shoes with skates,
scampered for cover. Nothing happened to him, but the scene of devastation that followed nearly took the sport.
"I thought seriously about leaving skating," said the Japanese,
who spent three days with his family in an emergency shelter.
His house was one of the thousands of homes destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami caused the quake.
Yuzuru, however, did not give up the sport.
Today, there is no reason to regret it: it is synonymous with victories and records in figure skating.
Winter Olympic champion, world champion, Grand Prix Final, the junior World ...
According to his trainer, Tracy Wilson, the Japanese used the maturity forced by tragedy as one of its best features.
"As he went through something so awful, he put the slip in place
and had a much better view of everything he does,"
he said it to The New York Times.
