1. Cliff Bleszinski
Lead Designer, Epic Games
2. Will Wright
Chief Designer, Maxis (EA)
3. Shigeru Miyamoto
Senior Managing Director and General Manager, Nintendo
Miyamoto is the poster child of game design, and has left his mark either directly or
indirectly on every project Nintendo has ever created. For 2007 however, there’s a
particularly good reason to place the legend in the top five, because the end of the
year will introduce a game that is purely his, a game that sees him putting his immense talents
to the still new Wii controller. Of course that title is Super Mario Galaxy,
the first game in the Mario series proper in years. It will naturally be another huge success for him,
no matter what metric for success you choose to use.

6. Eiji Aonuma
Designer, Nintendo EAD
One can’t help while playing Aonuma’s The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess how the designer
felt about the backlash against Wind Waker. One of the GameCube’s best games, it was inexplicably
chided by fans for being to childish, its lovely unique art style derided for no reason. From that point of view,
Twilight Princess could be viewed as a reprisal against his nay-sayers. It’s an effective one ?
it’s every bit as brilliant as his previous work, and universally loved. The millions
who have played it all seem to finally agree ? when it comes to designing a Zelda, Aonuma is absolutely Miyamoto’s equal.

7. Tetsuya Nomura
Producer, Square Enix
Nomura has been Square Enix’s most important creative for years now, since his design work
on Final Fantasy VII made that series a juggernaut. That series has continued to do well under
his watch, though it must be said that the most recent entries in the flagship franchise were not his work.
Instead he has been focusing on the Disney collaboration Kingdom Hearts, an RPG with
such universal appeal that it recently topped 10 million in sales. Now that series may be in fallow,
so he’s back on Final Fantasy ? and though none of the FFXIII games are likely to manage a stateside
release this year, fan anticipation for them is one more reason for him to be here.
