認識が浅いというなら、補語という説明も認識が浅い。
現代英文法講義でも英文法解説でも、形容詞・分詞の部分は文の主要素ではないとしている。
だから英文法解説は「補語」とはせずに「補語に準じる例」としている。
R. M. W. Dixonは下記の例を挙げて、時の副詞節の省略だとしている。
John retired (when he was) happy/a contented man.
Mary entered the room (when she was) angry/in tears.
