of criss-crossing laser beams being shone by someone who wants to make a spectacle
out of your challenge. 'Roll up folks, roll up. Watch this brave leap into the great
unknown!' There may not be any mean or mercenary motive in the way that someone is
encouraging you to act, but there's certainly an element of self-interest in some of
the advice you are being offered. What's obvious, you can see for yourself. And you
can do whatever's needed too. What's not so clear won't get any clearer if you hurtle
headlong into an effort to do what others expect.
