Although most parents in the English-speaking world would be horrified
to hear their children say something like the above,Japanese parents would
likely realize that their kids were talking about playing an enormously popular
Nintendo video game on a Panasonic-produced Woody computer.
While most Japanese knou that the astoundingly popular Pocket
Monsters capturing the hearts of children across the globe garnered their
name because the video game in which they originally appeared requires
players to capture an opponent's monster,then place it in a capsule stored in
a pocket,Takarajima says English speakers would quite likely vieu a
pocket monster in a slightly different light.
"Ask Americans what they think a Pocket Monster is and eight out of 10
will say it's a penis,"says a female interpreter.
