Japan Pulls Diplomats From South Korea Over Comfort-Women Statue

A day before the new statue’s erection, Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada visited the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, which honors Japan’s war dead, including convicted war criminals.

Even before scandals involving Ms. Park emerged in the fall, the two nations disagreed about whether Seoul should forcibly remove the statue in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul.
昨年秋に露呈した朴大統領のスキャンダル以前にも、両国はソウルの日本大使館前の銅像をソウル市が撤去するかどうかについて、意見が対立していた。
“At a time like this, it’s incumbent in particular on Japan, which has a strong and stable government, to exercise restraint and to resist the siren call of right-wing nationalists,” the official said.
（米外交）当局者は “（北朝鮮の挑発が活発な）現在のような状況では特に、より大きく安定した政府を持つ日本が、右翼国家主義者の危険なアピールに対抗して規制するなどの義務を負う” と語った。
