■ Dependence-like Behavioral Patterns Associated with Gig-type Micro Labor:
An Exploratory Mixed-Methods Study Integrating Qualitative Testimonies and Semi-Quantitative Scoring
⸻
Abstract
Background:
Gig-type micro labor has expanded rapidly with the development of digital platforms. While offering flexibility, its behavioral impact on workers remains insufficiently understood. This study explores the emergence of dependence-like behavioral patterns associated with such labor.
Methods:
We conducted an exploratory mixed-methods study using reconstructed qualitative testimonies (n=8) and applied a semi-quantitative scoring system across five domains: anxiety drive, compulsivity, immediate reward dependence, loss of agency, and life intrusion. Thematic analysis was performed to extract common behavioral patterns.
Results:
All cases demonstrated moderate-to-high anxiety drive (≥3/5). Higher scores in loss of agency and life intrusion were observed in older participants. Recurrent patterns included anxiety associated with inactivity, compulsive job-search behavior, and reduced autonomy in decision-making.
Conclusion:
Gig-type micro labor may be associated with reinforcement-driven behavioral patterns resembling dependence. However, findings are exploratory and require validation through large-scale and longitudinal studies.

1. Introduction
The expansion of gig-type micro labor has significantly altered modern labor dynamics by enabling short-term, on-demand employment through digital platforms. While this model enhances accessibility and flexibility, concerns have emerged regarding its long-term behavioral and psychological implications.
Existing research has primarily focused on economic outcomes and employment flexibility, with limited attention to behavioral patterns potentially resembling dependence. Given the presence of immediate rewards and intermittent reinforcement, gig-type labor may influence worker behavior in ways analogous to reinforcement-based conditioning systems.
The present study aims to explore whether such labor conditions are associated with dependence-like behavioral patterns, using qualitative testimonies and structured analysis.

2. Methods
2.1 Study Design
This study employed an exploratory mixed-methods design integrating qualitative and semi-quantitative approaches.
⸻
2.2 Data Collection
Data consisted of eight reconstructed testimonies derived from:
* Self-reported experiential narratives
* Third-party observations (family, colleagues)
* Retrospective behavioral descriptions
All data were anonymized and reconstructed to prevent identification. These materials are treated as qualitative observational data rather than direct clinical records.

2.3 Qualitative Analysis
A thematic analysis approach was used:
1. Extraction of behavioral statements
2. Coding into recurring themes
3. Identification of cross-case patterns
⸻
2.4 Semi-Quantitative Scoring System
Each case was evaluated across five domains (0–5 scale):
* Anxiety Drive (distress during inactivity)
* Compulsivity (repetitive, uncontrollable behavior)
* Immediate Reward Dependence
* Loss of Agency (reduced perceived autonomy)
* Life Intrusion (impact on daily life and relationships)
This scoring system is exploratory and has not been psychometrically validated.
⸻
2.5 Ethical Considerations
* All testimonies were anonymized and reconstructed
* No identifiable personal data were used
* This study does not involve clinical intervention or patient recruitment
* The analysis is conceptual and exploratory in nature

3. Results
3.1 Qualitative Findings
Across all cases, the following themes were consistently observed:
* Anxiety associated with non-working time
* Repetitive job-search behavior
* Gradual increase in working frequency
* Perceived reduction in voluntary choice
⸻
3.2 Behavioral Patterns
Three primary patterns emerged:
1. Anxiety-driven engagement:
Individuals reported discomfort when not working.
2. Compulsive repetition:
Frequent checking of job opportunities and repeated participation.
3. Functional intrusion:
Work behavior increasingly interfered with personal life.

3.3 Semi-Quantitative Results
* Anxiety Drive: ≥3 in all cases
* Compulsivity: ≥3 in 7/8 cases
* Loss of Agency: highest in older individuals
* Life Intrusion: elevated in family-reported cases
No case fell within the low-score range (0–2 total dominance absent).
⸻
4. Discussion
4.1 Interpretation of Findings
The observed patterns are consistent with reinforcement-based behavioral models, particularly variable ratio reinforcement, which is known to sustain high-frequency behavior.
The combination of:
* Immediate reward
* Unpredictable availability
* Low entry barriers
may contribute to sustained behavioral engagement.

4.2 Structural Context
Labor market conditions may amplify these effects:
* High substitutability
* Low wage growth
* Limited upward mobility
These structural factors may constrain exit options, reinforcing continued participation.
⸻
4.3 Clinical Implications
While not equivalent to established psychiatric diagnoses, the observed patterns overlap with:
* Anxiety-related behaviors
* Compulsive tendencies
* Behavioral dependence frameworks
These findings suggest the need for further investigation rather than immediate clinical classification.

4.4 Limitations
* Small sample size (n=8)
* Non-representative, reconstructed data
* Lack of validated measurement tools
* No longitudinal or causal inference
⸻
4.5 Future Research
Future studies should include:
* Large-scale quantitative surveys
* Longitudinal tracking
* Validation of scoring instruments
* Comparative control groups
⸻
5. Conclusion
This exploratory study suggests that gig-type micro labor may be associated with dependence-like behavioral patterns influenced by reinforcement mechanisms and structural labor conditions.
However, these findings remain preliminary and should be interpreted cautiously. Further empirical research is required to establish causality and generalizability.
