米下院軍事委員会のランディ・フォーブス委員長（共和党）は２６日に議会内で開かれた
中国人民解放軍の実態についての研究会で演説し、沖縄県・尖閣諸島問題について、
「米国が同盟国の日本を支持し、その基本をより明確に、かつ強固に表明していくことが
中国への最大の抑止となる。米国の目的はこの地域の安定であり、中国のいまの動向
はこの目標への挑戦となる」と述べた。
また、「尖閣を含む地域の安定を保つため、いざという際には、米国が日本を支援すると
いうことや、中国側が尖閣に対して何をしているのか、詳細に監視していることを中国側
により明確に知らせておくことが重要だ」と語った。
米軍のあり方に大きな権限を持つ下院軍事委員会を代表するフォーブス議員は、中国の
軍事動向を調査する「中国議員連盟」の会長も務めている。
