非文とか言ってる馬鹿はともかく、元ネタはホーソーンの小説からかな。

At the time which we speak of the poor lad was not very well dressed,
and wore shoes from which his toes peeped out; for his old father had
barely the means of supporting his wife and children.

「当時、その哀れな少年はあまりよい身なりをしておらず・・・」ってとこを
簡略化して、「当時、その少年は貧しかった」としたのが>>1の文かと。
