Original 8-bit FAT
Designed and coded by Marc McDonald, Microsoft Stand-alone
Disk BASIC introduced the FAT in 1977 with 8-bit table
elements,[8] produced for NCR's 8-bit 8080 file system.
The FAT, born during one of a series of discussions between
McDonald and Bill Gates, was used in a stand-alone version
of Microsoft BASIC for the 8086 chip in 1979 and eventually
in the M-DOS operating system.[8] The Microsoft Disk BASIC
version supported three FATs.
