私の知る限りでは、確かに Smartphone の世界で使われる an app, apps という言い方は
もともとは application(s) のことだったはずです。コンピュータの世界では application(s)
とか application software というはずです。日本語でもコンピュータの世界では
「アプリケーション」と言い、「アプリ」とは言わないようです。（ただし、私はコンピュータに
詳しいわけではありません。）
しかし、Smartphone の世界では、日本語でも「アプリ」というだけでなく、英語でも
an app, applications と言っているようです。少なくとも Internet 上の文章や
YouTube 上で書いたりしゃべったりしている人たちも、app(s) と言っているようです。
