Rome, December 14 ? Italian Premier Mario Monti came under fire when he addressed parliament on Wednesday,
despite changing his austerity package to soften its effect on the poorest.
The Senate speaker had to temporarily suspend a session after Northern League lawmakers jeered the premier
and held up banners reading ‘No More Taxes’ and ‘This is not a budget, It’s a Robbery’.
Unlike former premier Silvio Berlusconi’s People of Freedom party, the Northern League is not part of the broad
group of parties that are supporting former European commissioner Monti’s emergency government of non-political
technocrats. Among the changes Monti’s administration has made is a 400-euro discount for big families
on a reintroduced property tax, while current accounts holding less than 5,000 euros will be exempt from a new
34-euro levy.
Furthermore, pensions below 1,400 euros will still be index-linked, moving in line with inflation, unlike higher pensions.
The government has also announced a 15% tax on pensions above 200,000 euros.
