包皮内の細菌相の自然な構成は年令によって異なり、目、口、皮膚、女性器
のものと類似している。一時期は包皮嚢を洗うことが衛生に役立つと考えられていた。
しかしながら種馬の包皮嚢を石鹸で洗うと病原体.の増殖に繋がる。
ヒトの包皮を石鹸で洗うことは亀頭包皮炎のよくある原因となっている。
