Clearly, it is your effort that makes so many fascinating games
possible. The fascination, though, is only part of the values
you provide. Your great values lie so much with the fostering of
international friendship; so much so that I feel obliged to bring
into your attention the January 25th racially discriminating
misconduct by the soccer player Ki Sung-Yong in front of an
international camera crew.
The unacceptable “monkey chant” conduct by the young South Korean
who just turned twenty-two on January 24th was, apparently, aimed at
all the innocent Japanese citizens merely enjoying on TV the Asian
Cup semi-final between Japan and South Korea on the next day. As a
Japanese citizen, I say that we, in the least possible understatement,
were utterly offended. I now urge you to thoroughly investigate the
racism matter.
This is not to say that you should do nothing but punish Ki Sung-Yong.
He is still young and should be given a chance to regenerate himself.
I would also point out the necessity for South Korea to educate all
the other young soccer players of theirs never to repeat the same
mistake. I believe that this is where there is something that the
FIFA and the Korea Football Association could do together toward the
eradication of racism and the true goal of fair play.
I look forward to your prompt and most appropriate possible action.
