I see your point and it can be good advice for people that embrace mediocrity.
Sure, it's not exactly easy to be a world-class striker but then there are
thousands of failures for every success.
I work in R&D and create new technologies. Yes, I know it's an obscure field
that doesn't attract much attention but what my team makes happens
to be the best in the (albeit small and specialized) field. It brings profits
to a few major Japanese manufactures everybody knows of, and
some foreign companies and investors are showing interest too. I didn't
do it alone though. I have a lot of friends around me who inspire me
through their efforts to make a difference, not just in science and technology,
but in many other field as well. Say, you can find your passion in art for example,
and it doest even have to be "fine art." Anime and manga are good enough
if that's more your speed, and I always admire people who generate new
ideas and innovations. (i normally avoid these words because the they
are so cliche but oh well..) I'll grant you that most of those self-proclaimed
"artists" are not worth a crap but like i said, nothing is ever created
outside of an environment that fosters creativity.
If they really like what you say and do, just give a presentation in Japanese
or English and they'll start scrambling to get an interpreter to translate what
you have to say into whatever language they happen to speak. And I can tell
you, this feels pretty good. There are some 400 million speakers of english
and 700 million speakers of mandarin chinese. So many, in fact, that if your
only skill is language, you are completely replicable. It's sad but it’s a fact
of life. On the other hand, if you have a truly exceptional expertise in some
field, no matter how small it might be, the world will beat a path to your
email inbox. I can attest to this personally, though it doesn't happen everyday.
