Luke 13
Repent or Perish

Now there were some [ present at that time ]
[ who told Jesus about the Galileans
[ whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices ] ].
Jesus answered, “Do you think [ that these Galileans were worse sinners
[ than all the other Galileans (were) ]
[ because they suffered this way ]?
I tell you, no! But [ unless you repent ], you too will all perish.

Or those eighteen [ who died [ when the tower in Siloam fell on them ] ]—
do you think [ they were more guilty [ than all the others [ living in Jerusalem ] ]?
I tell you, no! But [ unless you repent ], you too will all perish.”
Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree [ growing in his vineyard ],
and he went [ to look for fruit on it ] but did not find any.
So he said to the man [ who took care of the vineyard ],
‘For three years now I’ve been coming [ to look for fruit on this fig tree ] and haven’t found any.
Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’
“‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year,
and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it.
[ If it bears fruit next year ], fine! [ If not ], then cut it down.’”

Luke 14
Jesus at a Pharisee’s House

One Sabbath, [ when Jesus went [ to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee ] ],
he was being carefully watched.
There in front of him was a man [ suffering from abnormal [ swelling ] of his body ].
Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful [ to heal on the Sabbath ] or not?”
But they remained silent. So [ taking hold of the man ], he healed him and sent him on his way.
Then he asked them, “[ If one of you has a child or an ox [ that falls into a well on the Sabbath day ] ],
will you not immediately pull it out?” And they had nothing [ to say ].

[ When he noticed [ how the guests picked the places of honor at the table ] ],
he told them this parable:
" [ When someone invites you to a [ wedding ] feast ],
do not take the place of honor,
for a person [ more distinguished [ than you ] ] may have been invited.
[ If so ], the host [ who invited both of you ] will come and say to you,
‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, [ humiliated ], you will have to take the least important place.
But [ when you are invited ], take the lowest place,
[ so that [ when your host comes ], he will say to you ],
‘Friend, move up to a better place.’

Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests.
For all those [ who exalt themselves ] will be humbled, and those [ who humble themselves ] will be exalted.”
Then Jesus said to his host, “[ When you give a luncheon or dinner ],
do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors;
[ if you do ], they may invite you back and so you will be repaid.
But [ when you give a banquet ], invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,
and you will be blessed. [ Although they cannot repay you ], you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

The Parable of the Great Banquet

[ When one of those at the table with him heard this ], he said to Jesus,
“Blessed is the one [ who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God ].”
Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests.
At the time of the banquet he sent his servant [ to tell those [ who had been invited ] ],
‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
“But they all alike began [ to make excuses ]. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field,
and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’
“Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way [ to try them out ].
Please excuse me.’

“Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’
“The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant,
‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’
“‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘[ what you ordered has been done ],
but there is still room.’
"Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel [ them to come in ],
[ so that my house will be full ].
I tell you, [ not one of those [ who were invited ] will get a taste of my banquet ].’”

The Parable of the Rich Fool

Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother [ to divide the inheritance with me ].”
Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed [ me a judge or an arbiter between you ]?”
Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed;
life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.
He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place [ to store my crops ].’
“Then he said, ‘This is [ what I’ll do ]. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones,
and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself,

The Rich Man and Lazarus

“There was a rich man [ who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day ].
At his gate was laid a beggar [ named Lazarus ], [ covered with sores and longing [ to eat [ what fell from the rich man’s table ] ] ].
Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
“The time came [ when the beggar died ] and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side.
The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, [ where he was in torment ], he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.
So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus [ to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue ],
[ because I am in agony in this fire ].’

“But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember [ that in your lifetime you received your good things ],
[ while Lazarus received bad things ], but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.
And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place,
[ so that those [ who want to go from here to you ] cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us ].’
“He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers.
Let [ him warn them ],
[ so that they will not also come to this place of torment ].’
“Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets;
let [ them listen to them ].’
“‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘
but [ if someone from the dead goes to them ], they will repent.’

Jesus Predicts His Death

From that time on Jesus began [ to explain to his disciples
[ that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders,
the chief priests and the teachers of the law ],
and [ that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life ] ].
Peter took him aside and began [ to rebuke him ].
“Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”
Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a [ stumbling ] block to me;
you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “[ Whoever wants [ to be my disciple ] ] must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
For [ whoever wants [ to save their life ] ] will lose it,
but [ whoever loses their life for me ] will find it.
What good will it be [ for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul ]?
Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels,
and then he will reward each person [ according to [ what they have done ] ].
“Truly I tell you, some [ who are standing here ] will not taste death

[ When he had said this ], Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let [ him go ].”

John 1
The Word Became Flesh

In the [ beginning ] was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was with God in the [ beginning ]. Through him all things were made;
without him nothing was made [ that has been made ]. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
There was a man [ sent from God ] [ whose name was John ].
He came as a witness [ to testify [ concerning [ that light, [ so that through him all might believe ] ] ] ].
He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
The true light [ that gives light to everyone ] was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and [ though the world was made through him ],
the world did not recognize him.
He came to that [ which was his own ], but his own did not receive him.
Yet to all [ who did receive him ], to those [ who believed in his name],
he gave the right [ to become children of God ]—
children [ born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God ].

The Word became flesh and made [ his dwelling ] among us.
We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son,
[ who came from the Father, [ full of grace and truth ] ].
(John testified [ concerning him ]. He cried out, [ saying ],
“This is the one [ I spoke about [ when I said ] ],
‘He [ who comes after me ] has surpassed me [ because he was before me ].’”)
Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace [ already given ].
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son,
[ who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father ],
has made [ him known ].

Job 1
Prologue

In the land of Uz there lived a man [ whose name was Job ].
This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.
He had seven sons and three daughters, and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys,
and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.
His sons used [ to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays ],
and they would invite their three sisters [ to eat and drink with them ].
[ When a period of [ feasting ] had run its course ], Job would make arrangements [ for them to be purified ].
Early in the morning he would sacrifice a [ burnt ] [ offering ] for each of them,
[ thinking ], “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.”
This was Job’s regular custom.

One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.
The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”
Satan answered the LORD, “From [ roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it ].”
Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him;
he is blameless and upright, a man [ who fears God and shuns evil ].”

But now stretch out your hand and strike everything [ he has ],
and he will surely curse you to your face.”
The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything [ he has ] is in your power,
but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”
Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
You judge others, and in the same way you will be judged.
You use a measure, and with the measure, you will be measured.
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
How can you say to your brother, ‘You havea speck in your eye. I'll take it out of your eye.’
All the time there is a plank in your own eye!
You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye,
Then you will see clearly
and you can remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

You have sacred things and do not give them to dogs.
Do not throw your pearls to pigs.

You do, then they may trample them under their feet,
and turn and tear you to pieces.

John 4
Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman

Now Jesus learned [ that the Pharisees had heard
[ that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples [ than John (did) ]—
[ although in fact it was not Jesus [ who baptized ], but his disciples ].
So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.
Now he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria [ called Sychar ],
near the plot of ground [ Jacob had given to his son Joseph ].
Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, [ tired [ as he was from the journey ], sat down by the well.
It was about noon.
[ When a Samaritan woman came [ to draw water ], Jesus said to her,
“Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town [ to buy food ].)

11/06/26 20:46:05.32
The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman.
How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
Jesus answered her, “[ If you knew the gift of God and [ who it is [ that asks you for a drink ] ],
you would have asked him and he would have given you [ living ] water.”
“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing [ to draw with ] and the well is deep.
Where can you get this [ living ] water?
Are you greater than our father Jacob,
[ who gave us the well and drank from it himself ],
[ as did also his sons and his livestock ]?”

11/06/26 20:51:12.78
Jesus answered, “Everyone [ who drinks this water ] will be thirsty again,
but [ whoever drinks the water [ I give them ] ] will never thirst.
Indeed, the water [ I give them ] will become in them a spring of water
[ welling up to eternal life ].”
The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water [ so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep [ coming here [ to draw water ] ].”
He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
“I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right [ when you say [ you have no husband ] ].
The fact is, [ you have had five husbands ],
and the man [ you now have ] is not your husband.
[ What you have just said ] is quite true.”

11/06/26 20:58:24.15
“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see [ that you are a prophet ].
Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,
but you Jews claim [ that the place [ where we must worship ] is in Jerusalem ].”
“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me,
a time is coming [ when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem ].
You Samaritans worship [ what you do not know ];
we worship [ what we do know ], for salvation is from the Jews.
Yet a time is coming and has now come [ when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth ],
for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
The woman said, “I know [ that Messiah” ([ called Christ ]) “is coming ].
[ When he comes ], he will explain everything to us.”
Then Jesus declared,
“I, the one [ speaking to you ]—I am he.”

Genesis 50

Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him.
Then Joseph directed the physicians in his service [ to embalm his father Israel ].
So the physicians embalmed him, [ taking a full forty days,
for that was the time [ required for [ embalming ] ].
And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.
[ When the days of [ mourning ] had passed ], Joseph said to Pharaoh’s court,
“[ If I have found favor in your eyes ], speak to Pharaoh for me.
Tell him, ‘My father made [ me swear an oath ] and said,
“I am about [ to die ]; bury me in the tomb [ I dug for myself in the land of Canaan ].”
Now let [ me go up and bury my father ]; then I will return.’”

11/06/27 10:39:03.11
Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, [ as he made [ you swear [ to do ] ].”
So Joseph went up [ to bury his father ]. All Pharaoh’s officials accompanied him—
the dignitaries of his court and all the dignitaries of Egypt—
besides all the members of Joseph’s household and his brothers and those [ belonging to his father’s household ].
Only their children and their flocks and herds were left in Goshen.
Chariots and horsemen also went up with him. It was a very large company.
[ When they reached the [ threshing ] floor of Atad, near the Jordan ],
they lamented loudly and bitterly; and there Joseph observed a seven-day period of [ mourning ] for his father.
[ When the Canaanites [ who lived there ] saw the [ mourning ] at the [ threshing ] floor of Atad,
they said, “The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of [ mourning ].”
That is [ why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim ].
So Jacob’s sons did [ as he had commanded them ] :
They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre,
[ which Abraham had bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite ].
After [ burying his father ], Joseph returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all the others
[ who had gone with him [ to bury his father] ] .

[ As he went along ], he saw a man [ blind from birth ].
His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, [ that he was born [ blind ]?”

The Vine and the Branches

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me [ that bears no fruit ],
[ while every branch [ that does bear fruit ] he prunes
[ so that it will be even more fruitful ].
You are already clean because of the word [ I have spoken to you ].
Remain in me, [ as I also remain in you ]. No branch can bear fruit by itself;
it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit [ unless you remain in me ].
“I am the vine; you are the branches. [ If you remain in me and I in you ], you will bear much fruit;
apart from me you can do nothing. [ If you do not remain in me ],
you are like a branch [ that is thrown away and withers ]; such branches are picked up,

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time

Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them,
“We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.
They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles [ to be mocked and flogged and crucified ].
On the third day he will be raised to life!”

A Mother’s Request
Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, [ kneeling down ], asked a favor of him.
“What is it [ you want ]?” he asked.
She said, “Grant [ that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom ].”
“You don’t know [ what you are asking ],” Jesus said to them.
“Can you drink the cup [ I am going to drink ]?”

“We can,” they answered.
Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but [ to sit at my right or left ] is not [ for me to grant ].
These places belong to those [ for whom they have been prepared by my Father ].”
[ When the ten heard about this ], they were indignant with the two brothers.
Jesus called them together and said, “You know [ that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them ].
Not so with you. Instead, [ whoever wants to become great among you ] must be your servant,
and [ whoever wants to be first ] must be your slave—
[ just as the Son of Man did not come [ to be served ], but [ to serve ], and [ to give his life as a ransom for many ] ].”

So they sent word to Joseph, [ saying ], “Your father left these instructions [ before he died ]:

I ask you [ to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs [ they committed in [ treating you so badly ] ].’
Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.”
[ When their message came to him ], Joseph wept.
His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him.
“We are your slaves,” they said.
But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?

All this took place [ to fulfill [ what the Lord had said through the prophet ] ]:
The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call [ him Immanuel ]”
([ which means “God with us” ]).
[ When Joseph woke up ], he did [ what the angel of the Lord had commanded him ]
and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage
[ until she gave birth to a son ]. And he gave him the name Jesus.
