I quite agree with you about the bottom line that learning a foreign
language is not that easy-peasy.
I learned the pronunciation of "bury" is like "berry" at school and
all of my dictionaries say "bury" should be pronounced like "berry."
What surprised me most was I found one native speaker of English
pronounced "bury" like "b-u-ry" which rhymes with "bully."
I asked him if it was the way it should be pronounced because I wasn't
able to trust my own ears! He said it was...
