While Crown Prince Fumihito visited Bhutan, his brother Japan's Emperor Naruhito enjoyed a day at his the family's summer retreat, the Nasu Imperial Villa.
He was joined by his wife Empress Masako and daughter Princess Aiko for a stroll in the villa's luscious grounds.
The royals took their rescue dog, Yuri, believed to be a Shiba Inu-cross, after they greeted about 450 people at the JR Nasushiobara Station on their way to the stately home.
Princess Aiko, 17, spoke to a fellow high school student about her upcoming exams and after-school activities as the family spoke to well-wishers for half-an-hour before travelling to their holiday home.
Meanwhile her mother, Empress Masako sported a pastel silk suit, clad with a wide-leg off-white trouser and pale purple blouse, to keep cool in the 80F heat.
Emperor Naruhito, stayed casual in suit trousers with an open-neck striped shirt and simple watch, while his daughter Aiko dressed summery in a pretty green dress with a bow detail.
The trip, Naruhito's first as Emperor, comes a year after his parents Emperor emeritus Akihito and Empress Michiko cancelled their planned summer retreat due to heavy rain and floods.
