Finance Chief Put Forward as Next Japanese Leader
Hoping for a second chance to fulfill a historic election mandate for change, Japan’s
governing Democratic Party on Friday chose a plain-spoken finance minister with
activist roots to be the party’s next leader.
The internal party vote virtually assures that the finance minister, Naoto Kan, 63,
will become the nation’s next prime minister, replacing Yukio Hatoyama, who resigned
Wednesday over broken campaign pledges.
