New Record-Lows For MLB All-Star Game
by Paulsen July 18, 2018
In a reversal from the overnights, MLB All-Star Game ratings fell to new record-lows.
Major League Baseball All-Star Game earned a 5.2 rating and 8.69 million viewers on FOX, down 5% in ratings and 6% in viewership from last year (5.5, 9.28M) and down 4% and a fraction of a percent, respectively, from 2016 (5.4, 8.71M).
Ratings and viewership were the lowest ever for the MLB All-Star Game, falling below the previous marks set in 2016. The Midsummer Classic has now set an all-time record low in six of the last nine seasons.
Including viewership on Fox Sports’ other platforms, the game narrowly avoided an all-time viewership low.
The combined audience across FOX, Fox Deportes and Fox Sports GO was 8.85 million ? down 6% from last year (9.44M) but up a fraction of a percent from 2016 (8.82M).
Fox Sports GO in particular delivered a streaming audience of 91,000, up 84% from last year (49K) and a record for the event.
The All-Star Game has now fallen below a 6.0 rating and 10 million viewers in three straight years.
The game had an 8.9 and 14.6 million less than a decade ago in 2009. As recently as 2014 it managed a 7.0 and 11.3 million, numbers that were considered weak at the time.
Despite the lower numbers, Tuesday’s game was the most-watched All-Star game in sports.
It edged January’s NFL Pro Bowl on ESPN/ABC (8.55M) and finished comfortably ahead of the NBA All-Star Game on TNT and TBS (7.65M).
It was not, however, the highest rated. The Pro Bowl had a slightly higher 5.3, marking the first time since 2013 that the MLB game has trailed its NFL equivalent.
The All-Star Game had a 2.1 rating in adults 18-49 (-9%), its lowest rating in the demo since at least 1991.
It trailed both the Pro Bowl (2.4) and the NBA All-Star Game (3.3). The game also had a 1.6 in adults 18-34 (-11%).
Host market Washington D.C. turned in a 9.3 rating, up 21% from last year and its highest for the All-Star Game since 2001. Fox did not specify the game’s top markets.
Despite the overall decline, several markets posted increases ? including Chicago (9.6, +60%), Los Angeles (7.9, +16%), Baltimore (7.4, +7%), Boston (7.3, +11%), Philadelphia (6.6, +32%), Atlanta (6.4, +23%) and Seattle (5.6, +24%).
