Soon, Contact Lenses to Help Manage Diabetes PRINT EMAIL
Daily News & Analysis (India)
December 27, 2009.Researchers at the University of Western Ontario have developed contact lenses that could help people with diabetes manage their blood-sugar levels.
The contacts, which were developed by chemical and biochemical engineering professor Jin Zhang, are embedded with extremely small nanoparticles that react with glucose molecules in tears.
The chemical reaction between the nanoparticles and the glucose molecules changes the color of the contacts.
Researchers say the contacts may someday eliminate the need for diabetes patients to test their blood-sugar levels by repeatedly drawing blood.
