"We would like to increase Mirai's visibility and try out new skills
at the junior level before being thrown into the fishbowl as a senior at nationals," said Charlene Wong, Nagasu's coach.
Wong also had what seemed to be a pragmatic reason for keeping Nagasu
where she is. Because it appeared Nagasu would get only one senior
Grand Prix event instead of the two that can count in the standings, it would have been virtually impossible for her to earn enough points to make the Grand Prix final. But Ashley Wagner, third at junior nationals
and junior worlds, got two Grand Prix assignments, which means Nagasu probably would have as well.
This doesn't mean Wong intends to put the brakes on Nagasu's future.
"The 2010 Olympics are in the back of our minds, no doubt," Wong said.
She still has plenty of time to get there.
