Senator staying out of taekwondo dispute
By Vicki Michaelis, USA TODAY
Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.), a central figure in Congress' recent investigation
into ethical and management misdeeds at the U.S. Olympic Committee, will not enter
a dispute between the USOC and the U.S. Taekwondo Union.
The USOC is decertifying the union for, among other reasons, what USOC spokesman
Darryl Seibel calls "a pattern of financial mismanagement." If the union is decertified,
the USOC would take over the process of selecting U.S. taekwondo athletes for the 2004
Summer Olympics.
In a letter dated Nov. 12 and sent to Campbell, union officials allege the USOC's actions
are rooted in racial discrimination. The union's president, vice president, secretary general,
treasurer and 2004 Olympic coach are Korean-born Americans.
