Full disclosure:
In a previous career, when I lived in Japan, I used to commission
and edit books on topics like these.
In fact, the originator of this column in the Mainichi
(Ryann Connell's predecessor) was a good friend and author of mine.
(He still contributes once in a while, under the nomme de plume of
Masuo Kamiyama.)
