Hey guys, I have a question about the title of the head of state of Japan. He’s known as the emperor while some people say he isn’t.
Which one do you think is correct?

Technically, the “Emperor” of Japan is hardly an emperor, because he doesn’t rule multiple regions that comprise of multiple ethnicities.
Even the Queen of the UK isn’t called emperor after the disbandment of the British Empire, where the sun never sets, having ruled like
a quater of the planet, let alone Japan.

Actually the title of the Emperor of Japan is kind of expediency. As Asian culture is quite distinct from European where the term Emperor
originated, we don’t necessarily take it as the identical entity, and they indeed call him Tenno, not Emperor, in Japan, then again, it could
be said that the historical fact that the Okimi, Mikado, Tenno, Emperor or whatever of Japan paid tributes to the Chinese Emperor and were
invested with titles makes it difficult for him to be regarded as a true emperor in terms of lexical meaning, and the Chinese emperor should
be the Emperor of East Asia. I don’t intend to step into an in-depth semantic argument, but there are some points to say he isn’t an emperor.
